J. Mitchell Drops The Visuals For New Single 'Grinding'

South-London born musician J. Mitchell reveals his new video for his latest single ‘Grinding’.

When did you first get into music?

The age I first started getting into music, I can’t remember specifically but I was very young, I was about 5 or 6 years old when my mum first discovered that I could sing. She saw that I could sing and she got me into choirs, music after school clubs, singing competitions and stuff like that. I started getting into playing other instruments, the singing brought forth many other opportunities and led me to realise that I could play instruments such as the piano, the kick drums and the trumpet. So I got in to music at a very young age.

What has influenced you and your music?

Growing up watching music channels and watching my favourite artists such as Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, I watched Usher dancing too. I can sing and dance and I produce my own music as well. Watching those artists do their thing, watching them wining Grammys and big awards at ceremonies and all of that, I used to see all of these artists on the red carpet. It just made me put myself in their shoes and just picture myself one day living that dream and actually taking my music career to the next level. Every time I would watch any artist accept an award it would just make me feel so alive, I would be inspired immediately and know that this I what I want to do for the rest of my life. I don’t want to do anything else, I don’t want to do a 9 to 5 or work for anybody I just want to work for myself and share my talent with the world. Watching my idols soar with their careers is what inspired me and gave me a reason to keep pushing and keep going and chasing my destiny which is to be an international worldwide performer.

What was the inspiration behind 'Grinding'?

That’s a good question. The inspiration behind grinding was numerous things. Firstly I’d say that there was a time, I’d say from 2017 to 2018, especially 2018 I’ve been through a lot. A lot of things that I never even saw coming, a lot of situations that just came out of nowhere that I couldn’t even fathom. Some I took as lessons and some of them were unfortunate because I had a lot of people around me that weren’t as happy for me as I was. They would smile in my face and trash talk me behind my back, laugh at me because I wanted to chase my dreams. They either didn’t believe in me or they were just threatened or jealous of my confidence and perseverance to go after my goals and ambitions. I had people around me who were not supportive of me. Because of this I’ve lost a lot of friends but I’ve gained a lot of knowledge and power.

‘Grinding’ is me telling this story in such a short space of time. This track is about me fighting back and expressing myself. I don’t care how much you doubt me, I’m going to keep on grinding and believe in myself.

Who are your musical inspirations?

I have a lot. I was always a fan of Michael Jackson, he had that image that just drew you to him. No matter where you were, no matter what mood you were in, Michael Jackson was the one, period. I also have old school inspirations and new school inspirations. For old school I have Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder, Usher, and Chris Brown. He’s an artist that’s been in the game for over a decade and he’s still maintaining his career with longevity. For new school I have Tory Lanez, Bryson Tiller, Travis Scott, Ty Dolla $ign. I consider myself as a fusion between the old school and the new school because I’m a person who grew up listening to a lot of 80s & 90s music and I’m also listening to the music that’s current right now. I listen to all genres of music I don’t like to put myself in one box. I take inspiration from music from all different eras and I put my own flip to it.

What can we expect from you in the future?

I plan on doing a lot of things. 2018 I wasn’t as motivated and driven as I am now. Right now you can expect consistency, I’m going to try and release a single once a week. Expect some Eps, music videos a lot of visuals. Expect some behind the scenes footage. I’m going to be very active this year and give my listeners a bit of insight of how my process is made just to get closer to my listeners.
