Hayward Joins The Celtics
After what has seemed like one of the free agency saga's of the summer it draws to a close only four days into free agency. Gordon Hayward has joined the Boston Celtics, reportedly signing for $128 million dollars over 4 years. The Hayward deal had much been predicted to act almost as a fallen domino for the team he signs with and with him heading to Boston it'll be interesting to see what other moves they make to ensure they can once again compete in the East.
Hayward reiterated that it was not an easy decision, countless conversations with his wife and inner circle since the end of the season all the way up to his decision. Thanking both fans and the organisation for his seven great years there.
"I know that will be tough to hear for Jazz fans — and I really want you all to know that you mean the world to me and my family. Over the past few days, I’ve been genuinely torn. And I know that this process isn’t easy on the fans, either. So I just want to be as straight-up as possible about why I’m coming to Boston." -Gordon Hayward, The Players Tribune
Ultimately his decision to move to Boston was down to the city's winning culture. He wasn't short in mentioning all the other sports teams on top of the Celtics and reeled off a couple of the great Russell, Bird, Pierce as well as mentioning some of the current roster. But also that of his old college coach. Coach Stevens for many people was always going to be a deciding factor for Hayward having been together back in Butler. He made it clear that they due still had unfinished business...
"And that unfinished business we had together, back in 2010, when I left Butler for the NBA … as far as I’m concerned, all of these years later, we still have it:
And that’s to win a championship."
