All Eyez On Me Surpasses Expectations At The Box Office Despite Lukewarm Reception
The weekend box office numbers have finally arrived, showing a third place finish of $27.1 million for All Eyez On Me, the Tupac biopic that Lionsgate-Codeblack released on his 46th birthday. It surpassed previous expectations of $17 million to $20 million. This is surprising, given lackluster reviews from both fans and movie critics.
All Eyez On Me follows the life of Tupac Shakur, a cultural rap icon who was tragically gunned down at only 25 years old in a drive-by shooting. The film stars Demetrius Shipp Jr. as Tupac, Danai Gurira as his mother Afeni Shakur, and Kat Graham as Jada Pinkett (Smith).
Celebrities such as 50 Cent and Jada Pinkett Smith have said negative things about the movie. In an Instagram post uploaded on June 17th, Fif added a caption saying "Man I watched the 2 PAC film, that was some bullshit. Catch that shit on a fire stick 👎trust me. LOL SMH TRASH". In a flurry of tweets, Pinkett talked about the inaccurate portrayal of her relationship with Tupac in the movie.
